The Path Toward Your Future Self
At a young age, people begin to ask children, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" When I was first asked this question, I had no idea what to say. It felt like the question itself negated my personhood; that if I answered with honesty and said, "The grown-up version of me," I would be laughed at.
Fast forward several jobs, including a career coach for adults who continued to wrestle with that question, and I've come to realize that it's the wrong question. I don't ask it. In fact, I wish we could ban it from our lexicon forever. Instead, I would rather know HOW you want to be being as you grow up and become who you truly are. Wouldn't you?
We each have talents, skills, and curiosity. If we can learn to recognize our natural talents, we can begin to understand how we want to show up as we grow up and seize career opportunities that will challenge, excite, and provide for us. Besides, a career no longer develops in a straight line and hasn't for decades. It jumps forward, skips back, loops around, stops, curves, and bounds ahead once more. However, the systems set up to prepare us for a career haven't evolved for centuries.
But fear not! You don’t have to feel lost or like you’re a failure because you’re rounding a curve. I’d even argue that those curves and loops are the very points during which growth happens. As you begin to see yourself from the vantage point of your strengths rather than your weaknesses, possibilities will spring open and that winding path begins to make sense.
